Jim Clark Remembered .. — 16 Comments

  1. Thank you for your excellent article “Jim Clark Remembered” as a small Boy I ad a fascination with Ayrton Senna who to me was a racing god.I read that Ayrton’s Hero was Jim Clark and he was a sheep farmer just like I was to become, this man became a new hero the green car that always led from the front and Indy 500 winnner! . I read everything and imagined what it was like . I made a small pilgrimage to Kilmany last year to stand at the side of the great man. A beautiful place where time seams to have stood still since the time of giants such as Jim Clark ruled the racing world. There was not a breath of air it was almost silent I looked at his face and imagined how it was. Very moving indeed . Thank you david.

  2. It is we, David, who must thank you for your kind words. It’s very encouraging to all of us at Scotiana to receive Comments like this!

I’ve tried to find out a little about the memorials to Jim Clark. The life-sized sculpture at Kilmany is by the Scottish artist David Annand (b.1948), who by coincidence has his home and studio in the village. Unveiled by Sir Jackie Stewart on 30 May 1997, this fine piece of work was, I understand, based upon Mrs Clark’s favourite photo of her son, walking about the pits in his racing overalls. (A second example of this bronze was made, and can be seen at the Mallory Park circuit in Leicestershire, together with, I think, sculptures of five other figures from the world of motorsport, all by David Annand.)

The Memorial at Hockenheim, inaugurated on 26 April 2010, is composed of green slate panels with a gold inscription, and incorporates the small stone originally placed at the site of Jim Clark’s fatal crash.

The new Jim Clark Motorsport Museum will soon open at 44 Newtown Street, DUNS, Scottish Borders. (The postcode is: TD11 3AU) It’s hoped that preparations will be complete by mid-July, but I shall confirm the actual date.

Fifty years on from the original Jim Clark Memorial Room, opened by Mr and Mrs Clark on the first anniversary of their son’s death, a new chapter now begins in the story of Jim Clark. Plans for the new Museum were first conceived in 2013, and the Jim Clark Trust (with charitable status) established two years later. Fundraising began in earnest in 2017, and the actual construction work just last year, 2018.

(Refurbished and extended about 25 years ago, the Memorial Room was formally re-opened by Jackie Stewart,OBE on 2 April 1993. But it would have been the original, smaller Jim Clark Room that Ayrton Senna came to in 1991, famously including his home address in Sao Paulo, Brazil when signing the visitors’ book.)

Yes, the splendid new Museum is on track to open next week, on 11 July to be precise – a French week has eight days! Dario Franchitti, MBE, the Scottish-born winner of the gruelling ‘Indy 500’ in 2007, 2010 and 2012, has just delivered to Duns Jim Clark’s Lotus-Ford Cortina car, which will now go on permanent display. Alongside it will be one of Jim’s extremely rare Formula 1 cars, the rear-engined Lotus 25/R6, kindly lent by the owners of the Tinguely Art Museum, Switzerland.

The formal opening of the new Museum is scheduled to take place on Thursday, 29 August, the ceremony performed by Jim’s friend, Sir Jackie Stewart. In addition to perpetuating the memory of Jim Clark – for those who witnessed his brilliant career – the Museum will, I hope, bring the life and legacy of this wonderfully talented man to generations of younger people who know only Clark’s name.

  6. Thank you GT for telling the story of this greatest man I’ve never heard of. A man who lived life to how we should all aspire too. I will be reading more of this man’s life and ideologies. Thank you Jimmy and well done… mate.

The Jim Clark Trail – a 50-mile circular route around Duns – has been launched to coincide with the re-opening of the Jim Clark Motorsport Museum (after its winter break) on Sunday 1 March. The Trail connects the new Museum with Chirnside, Edington Mains Farm, Berwick and the former airfields at Winfield and Charterhall.

  8. Only a minority of car makers, I would think, have ever been concerned in such motorsports as Formula 1 or Rallying. It’s an expensive business, but success attracts prestige and much favourable publicity.

The Japanese firm Subaru ended their involvement in Rallying in 2008, after a good number of years of success in the sport. For three years in succession – 1995, 1996, 1997 – the Scottish driver Colin McRae (1968-2007) had won the World Rallying Championship in their cars.

McRae, from Lanark, died tragically with his young son and two friends in a helicopter accident.

I was interested to read in Subaru’s most recent Newsletter that when Colin McRae won in 1995 – at the age of 26 – he was the youngest ever to have achieved the World Championship, a record which still stands today, 25 years later.

  9. Hello
When I was growing up in the 60s, my dad & brother & myself were members of a slot racing car club & myself & dad were massive Jim Clark fans.Jimmy was taken from us all when I was 10 y/old & to say I was devastated is an understatement!
No other race car driver has been able to take Jimmy’s crown of the Greatest from him no matter how many races or titles they win.
Jimmy has always been my spots hero & that has never changed for 54 years & never will. My Mum, Dad & myself visited Jimmy’s old trophy room not long after it opened,I visited the new room 10 years ago. I’ve yet to visit the museum but health problems are preventing my visit, but I intend to get there,to see my hero’s impressive trophy’s & race cars first chance I get.

Born on 4 March 1936, Jim Clark might soon have seen his 90th birthday. But his life was cruelly cut short just as he reached the peak of his powers, his record in Formula One unmatched.

In time for Jim’s birthday, the Jim Clark Motorsport Museum at Duns has reopened for the season – and two of the World Champion’s 1965 Lotus cars will be displayed for the first time, a Type 35/2 and a Type 33.
