Melrose Abbey : a King, a Wizard and Sir Walter Scott’s Faithful Servant Buried There? — 11 Comments

  1. It was great reading this. Yes indeed Tom Purdie or Tam Purdie is an ancestor of mine. I continue to seek information on him and just how we are related, so this was outstanding to find. I do have an old newspaper clipping that was in our family bible whereby an ancestor on the occasion of her 100th birthday mentions the relationship. Thanks again!

    • Hello,
I was working on my genealogy today on the Fairbairn side. I decided to look back past Janet Fairbairn (nee Purdie) and discovered that Thomas (Tom) was her father. How wonderful. That makes him my 4th great great grandfather as near as I can figure. What an interesting man. I live in New Zealand.

      • I have the same connection to Tom as you through my maternal Gandmother, Elizabeth Fairbairn, born in Galashiels. Tom is my great, great, great, grandfather.
I live in Oxford but I’m from the Scottish Borders.

    • Kia ora and hello from New Zealand. My name is Ebony and I’m doing research on my partners family on the Purdie side. Thomas is my partners fourth great grandfather.

He is a direct descendant of Thomas/Tom/Tam Purdie through his son Charles Walter Scott Purdie. Charles migrated to New Zealand and had a family here with a woman named Maria Parker.

  2. The lady who is mentioned in the newspaper cutting is my great great grandmother. My father, who never knew her, did tell me about her. The newspaper cutting is, I think, from the Strathearn Hearald the local newspaper in Crieff, Perthshire.
I have only very recently become aware of the Purdie connection and am also very interested to find out more.

    • Hi Margaret! so, that would make us cousins. 🙂 I am aware of the Harley connection in Crieff and as I just returned from Scotland, I had hoped to visit Crieff, but could’t fit it in. Totally into exchanging information and photos, so if there is any way I can help, just ask. It took me a while to sort out what was meant in that clipping when it said she was named for a Purdie. “Whose name she bears” … :)) My middle name is Margaret by the way and you have eyes exactly like two of my sons.

      • Hi Jean,
I have just got back to trying to sort out the Purdie connection and have not got very far.
I would be very happy to share and exchange information.
My great grandmother was Annie Rogers, daughter of Marion Rogers, the lady in the newspaper cutting.
She came from Ruthglen and married a James Harley who had a chemists shop in Crieff.

        Margaret.

  3. Tom and Sheriff(not yet Sir Walter)Scott first met in Court at Selkirk, Scottish Borders. We believe in the family that the exchange went as follows:

Sheriff Scott : ‘ Guilty as charged. Fined one Guinea.’
    TP : Time tae pay, m’lord !
WS: Indeed? How much time do you require?
    TP: Er…thon depends.
WS: It depends on what ?
TP: It depends on how the salmon are runnin’!
    (Loud Laughter)
    Macer: Silence in Court !

Two weeks later, probably at Ashestiel.
WS : Mr Purdie, I need a water bailie. Do you wish to fish legally on the Tweed?
    Tom : Aye, Shirra…(Sheriff)

They were together till Tom’s death in 1829.

  4. Kia ora and hello. It’s been a wee while but nevertheless thank you for writing about your time at Melrose Abbey. I hope to visit one day with my partner. He is a descendant of Thomas / Tom / Tam Purdie. Thomas had a son named Charles Walter Scott (in honour of his friend Sir Walter Scott) who migrated to New Zealand and whom my partner is descended from. It’s very helpful for me to find stories like yours because we haven’t got very many in our family here in New Zealand. So again, thank you very much.

  5. My great x5 grandmother was Jean Purdie (married John Wilson), thought to be related to Tam Purdie as well. I am Canadian.
