Lord Strathcona’s Glencoe Estate bought back by MacDonald’s of Glencoe descendance — 9 Comments

  1. Just wanted to say I visited a friend in Glencoe yesterday (3rd July 2011)and we had a lovely walk around this beautiful Loch. I was interested to read the connection to Canada, a country I’ve fallen in love with after visiting for 3 years in a row !
What makes this place even more special is the fact that I have just discovered that Lord Strathcona comes from my Birthplace of Forres Morayshire !
Life sure is full of surprises !

  2. In May 2011 Glencoe House was sold by NHS Highland to Roger Niemeyer for about £450,000 after the South Lochaber Community Group failed to raise the funds during 2010. The house is currently being restored.

  3. No Michael this is not the same land. The land you are referring to is sold by some rather dubious characters from Alderney in the Channel Islands, currently going under the name of Highland Titles Glencoe Estates. The land these people sell is not even in Glencoe!

What they did was buy a bit of land in Appin and called it Glencoe Wood though it is nowhere near Glencoe and had never been known by that name! They did at one time claim the land they sell was actually in Glencoe!

They have gone under several different names over the years, Lochaber Highland Estates, Scottish Highland Titles, Lochaber Highland Estates (CI)Limited, Quality Design (CI) Limited and the people behind them (Peter Bevis, Laura Bevis, Helen MacGregor) have been responsible for other unsavoury & dubious ventures.

You can read more about them and what they get up to at these sites.

  4. Also visited this lovely garden and estate in 2008, and was very impressed with the Canadian theme for the landscaping. Let us only hope that much of this land and building will be preserved in one way or another. A lot of heritage & history involved.

  5. I am a direct descendant of Donald Alexander Smith do I have any claim on his assets ? My birth great grandmother Lydia Brooks gave birth to his son in Labrador.

  6. I am a direct descendant of Donald Alexander Smith my great great grandmother Lydia Brooks gave birth to his son , In Labrador . This was proved in my genealogy in authority of the Canadian government . Do I have any right to his property ?

  7. I first visited this Glencoe Estate in 1987. That started my quest of studying Lord Strathcona’s life pursuits and staggering volume and enormity of accomplishments. I bought the biograpy, “The Life of Lord Strathcona and Mount Royal”, by (Canadian) Beckles Wilson – an original edition published in 1915, Cassell and Company Limited. I’ve since given illustrated presentations in Southern Ontario, especially where the name Strathcona has been used for streets, hospitals, schools, etc. I would venture to say that the majority of today’s Canadians have no clue about this man whose name is an integral part of so many towns and cities in this country. Spread the word.
